繁華街って英語でなんて言う？

テレビを見ていたら" entertainment district"という表現を見かけました。

直感的には「繁華街」かなと思ったんですが、気になったので調べてみました。

「繁華街 英語」で検索すると、" downtown" " city center" などがヒットします。

ちょっと長いですが、downtownのWikipediaでは以下のように解説されています。

Downtown is a term primarily used in North America by English speakers to refer to a city's commercial, cultural and often the historical, political and geographic heart, and is often synonymous with its central business district (CBD). It is marked by a cluster of tall buildings, cultural institutions and the convergence of rail transit and bus lines. In British English, the term "city centre" is most often used instead.

商業、文化、歴史的・政治的・地理的な中心で、商業の中心地と同義。

高層ビルや文化施設、鉄道・バス路線が集まっているところ。

イギリス英語では代わりにシティーセンターが使われる。

downtownは、文字通り街の中心ですね。

ただ、私の持っている繁華街のイメージはどちらかというと飲み屋とか遊び場所がある感じなので、それとはしっくり来ないような気がします。繁華街を辞書で調べてみると「商店などが建ち並び、多くの人でにぎわっている地域」と説明されています。この意味だとdowntownが当てはなるのは分かる気がします。しっくり来ないのは自分の日本語の理解の問題？？？

さて、冒頭の" entertainment district"に話を戻します" entertainment district"をWikipediaで検索してみると、

An entertainment district is a type of arts district with a high concentration of movie theaters, theatres or other entertainment venues.

映画館や劇場、その他の遊び場が集まっているところ

うんうん、イメージがちょっと近づいてきました。辞書によっては、「歓楽街」という訳も載っています。歓楽街だと、また少し違ったニュアンスもありますよね…^^;

長くなってしまったので、そろそろまとめます。

辞書的な意味での繁華街は" downtown"または" city center"

遊び場のイメージであれば、”entertainment district"

日本語でも繁華街のイメージは人それぞれですので、説明するのは一番大事ではないかと思います。

銀座、新橋、歌舞伎町をdowntownという人もいれば、そうでないという人もいるんだと思います。
